Solid is an acronym for “Social Linked Data”, but it’s useful for private data too. It’s a way to make web applications that don’t control their users logins or data – a way off the big platforms.
Solid gives you a WebID and a personal data store (called a pod), a private space on the web where your data lives. Apps don’t store your data anymore. Instead, you sign in to an app with your WebID and use it to manage the data in your store. You decide who gets to read and edit your data; everyone, no one, or just some people.
Think about all the places your information is scattered right now. Your photos on one service. Your documents on another. Your website on Squarespace.
None of those places talk to each other. And none of them really belong to you. You’re renting space on their servers to hold you r data, and you don’t get to decide what they do with it.
